It starts with a trusty tape measure.
Reality is the place to begin, so measure your room, including doorways, stairways and windows. (Note how high the windows are off the floor, too.)

Bring in samples
Pictures from magazines are helpful, as are "before" photos of your home. Bring pillows, paint chips or swatches of wallpaper, carpet, drapery and upholstery. One woman brought her cat, whose colors she loved. It worked, and her room turned out to be beautiful.

Plan ahead – allow 6-8 weeks at least
Most furniture manufacturers need 6-8 weeks to make and deliver a special order. That means you should start shopping for the patio in February or March. And plan for the holidays in August or September.
